Christmas Storage Solutions

I know we are over a week into the new year and I’m just getting to my Christmas Storage solutions post! Hey, better  late then never. Most of you may already have packed everything away, but I figured I would share this with you. This was our second Christmas together and my second time unpacking/packing up Christmas decorations and home decor for the Holiday season. I had a total of 6 huge storage bins which were filled with ornaments, lights, stockings and decorations for the whole home. It was a huge hassle this year bringing up all the tubs and the Christmas tree box up from the basement. I actually cringed thinking about packing everything away. I knew I needed to find something better. Let’s just say I have 4 empty bins now and a new Christmas tree bag!
My first step after Christmas was to go onto Amazon and see what kind of Christmas storage solution deals I could get. I was currently using 4 tubs just to store the ornaments. We have a lot of ornaments that we don’t even put on the tree but keep because they are sentimental, problem is all those ‘sentimental’ ornaments were mixed in with the ornaments we actually put on the tree. Doesn’t make sense does it? I ended up ordering 2 storage boxes that hold 60+ ornaments, I figured this was a good starting point. The boxes I got are pictured above and you can purchase them by clicking here
So my process of organizing everything consisted of sorting through all the ornaments and putting them in the boxes. I still have room in both boxes for more ornaments. I have one box with the ornaments we use and ones that we don’t (both boxes are labeled). Now, essentially, I only have to bring 1 box of ornaments up from the basement, compared to 4. I think that sounds better, don’t you?
I then just organized (and labeled) the clear storage tubs with all the other Christmas stuff. This includes any decorations for the home, stockings, tree skirt, lights, etc.
I can honestly say now that I won’t be complaining about bringing up all the boxes of Christmas decorations next year and I’m pretty stoked about that!

Jewelry Organization

I’ve always been a fairly organized person and I take great pride in that attribute of mine. However, I’m not always 100% organized and when I’m not I get a bit frantic and need to fix it right away. The thing about organization is that it’s always changing and changing to fit your current needs. What may have worked previously may no longer be the case due to a number of different things. However, the process of organization typically stays the same.

My process of organization is first determining what the problem is and brainstorming ideas and different ways to make the process better to fit my needs. It’s also important to remember that if you organize a drawer for instance you need to keep up with keeping it organized. Just because you clean something out doesn’t mean that it will stay that way. I think we can all agree with that, hence the junk drawer. When you are organizing a space try to think about how you are going to use the space and what will work best for you and your family in order to keep it organized…and always keep in mind when going through your things, don’t be afraid to trash items that need to be thrown away, donating items that you no longer use or selling them as well.

My organization project this week was jewelry organization. I few months back I bought the Alex cabinet from Ikea in black/brown. My sole reason for purchasing this six drawer cabinet was for it to hold all my jewelry and small wristlets and clutches. I knew there was a problem when my previous jewelry organization system just wasn’t working anymore. I found myself not putting things back and I would have jewelry all over the house. The main reason why this system wasn’t working anymore was because I had more jewelry. I acquired more jewelry thanks to Charming Charlies and many of my pieces, especially necklaces were too large for what I was using.

I previously was using plastic storage bins that had dividers in them and they snapped closed. I had three of them and they were working pretty good for a few years. I will be re-purposing one of these bins to hold batteries. I haven’t figured out what to use the other two for, yet.

Many of my items like super big necklaces and bracelets ended up on top of my dresser. I purchased the Stacking Jewelry Tray System from The Container Store. I searched many different possibilities but this system was the winner in my book. They fit the drawers easily and if needed in the future, the containers are stackable. This system is designed to fit rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. I like that it keeps pieces separate and the material is felt. I already know that I will need to be ordering more of these in a different style to hold my lovely bracelets and such, however, for now I’m much happier with the system. I found that when I get home from work the jewelry I wore that day is already being put back in it’s place!

As always,
happy organizing!!!

Kitchen Clutter

Happy Monday Everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. Saturday was a rainy cold day so I stayed in pretty much the whole day and got to spend quality time with my two favorite guys minus the husband (he was at work).
Hank is on the left, Vinny is on the right

Okay so onto the real situation: Kitchen Clutter….I hate it but I’m afraid I have to admit that I have a bit of it. We have these two beautiful upper cabinets that have glass doors…that are well…just cluttered. I haven’t really taken the time to organize them or decide what purpose I want them for since we moved in. They are on the opposite side of the kitchen from everything else, so everyday dishes really don’t work well in these cabinets. I currently have a mix of items from cook books, cash, gum, dog’s heartworm pills to an array of other things. I had plans to display one of my china settings in this cabinet, but haven’t gotten around to it.

So here is what it looks like now…..
Below these cabinets is a skinny counter…not very deep at all…too ashamed of posting a picture of it right now. This counter seems to be a dumping ground for keys, papers, mail and receipts. It also holds my beautiful orange kitchen aid mixer and our phone.

Plan of action?

Organize, Organize and Organize!

I was thinking about frosting the glass cabinet doors. I don’t have enough ‘china’ or other fancy things to display in these cabinets so I do want to make good use of it. I think frosting the glass will  help me achieve this look because I don’t want everything to be on display.

I will bring out one of my china settings and display it on the shelf, that I do know. Some of the other things, like gum and Tums can make it’s way out of these cabinets and into a drawer. I’ve decided the cook books can stay, I’ll just display them nicer. I do want to keep the dog’s heartworm pills and such, but not so much in the open. I do like the idea of keep various chargers in here as well, just not in the open. I thought some decorative boxes could do the trick to keep things in there place. I thought this set of bins or these would work nice.

Well…I’m sure as I gather some organization tools I will be on my way to better looking upper cabinets…along with a solution to the dumping ground of a counter just below!
happy de-cluttering!!
